Presensoft has set the new standard for IM security and policy management in the ongoing effort to promote trust in the historically un-trusted realm of instant messaging.

IM Background
Instant Messaging (IM) is a technology that allows you to maintain a list of people you wish to interact with on a regular basis. You can send messages to any one in your list, often called a buddy list or contact list, as long as that person is online. This opens up a small window where you and your friend can type in messages that both can see.

Email has been the most rapidly adopted form of communication. In less then two decades, it has gone form obscurity to mainstream dominance. Many times even the rapid response of email is not fast enough. With email, you have way of knowing if the person you are sending email is online at a particular moment. When sending multiple emails back and forth with the same person, you must click through a few steps to read, reply and send the email. This is why instant messaging (IM) has gained popularity and why AOL, Yahoo!, Microsoft and IBM are right at the center of this recent explosion.

Most instant messaging programs provide a variety of features:
Instant Messages - send emails back and forth with someone who is online.
Chat - create your own custom chat room with friends and co-workers.
Web Links - share links to your favorite websites.
Images - look at an image stored on a friend or coworkers' computer.
Sounds - Play sounds for friends or coworkers.
Files - share files by sending them directly to friends or co-workers.
Talk - use the internet instead of a phone to talk with friends or co-workers.
Streaming content - real-time or near real-time stock quotes and news.
IM has proven it’s usefulness by offering a fast, personal way for individuals and groups to connect with one another. In fact, connecting to another IM user takes about the same effort as making a telephone call. However, IM offers a level of service a telephone cannot, "presence awareness". Users can see whether a person is available before attempting to send a message. In addition, it is possible for one user to have multiple, separate conversations at one time with various other users, something that is not possible over the phone.

IM Risk
The risks associated with unmonitored IM communications are endless. Numerous studies have proved that both children and adults are willing, and likely to say and do things over the internet that they would rarely consider doing in person. For children specifically, this willingness to take chances, coupled with a lack of understanding of the risks associated with chat rooms and online predators, creates problems that may change their lives forever.

Here are a few facts to consider regarding instant messaging:
15 million children are currently using IM
20% of all children using chat rooms have been approached by pedophiles
90% of sexual solicitations happen over IM chat rooms
Without Presensoft IM Protector or a product like it, you will never know if your child is a victim
